Before Hotaru CMS, I was with Pligg. However, Pligg is too expensive for me, because most plugin is not free and it is not as user friendly as Hotaru CMS.

So I was searching for other Digg-like script via Google search and found Hotaru CMS.
On my first installation, I was given a pack of plugins which might cost me more than $100 in Pligg. I was so lucky that I found Hotaru CMS before investing too much on Pligg.

Another great thing about Hotaru CMS is the support I received in forum. Nick is just like a 24/7 support robot and friendly. So, thumbs up for Hotaru CMS :D

I used Pligg in many sites but devasted by the resource. I have to pay high price for important modules. We should wait more than 3-4 months for free templates but i get everything same in hotaru for free and its easily expandable.

Thank you.

+ Every now and then, serious security vulnerabilities are being discovered in Pligg.

I Googled for social bookmarking platforms for my site. I discovered Hotaru, Pligg and some others but Hotaru seemed the friendliest. I launched my web site www.recipe-saver.com rather quickly using Hotaru and I'm very pleased.

I Googled for Digg like website CMS. I found Pligg and Hotaru . I started coding over pligg but soon found that it's not so easy and it has too many bugs. I think I was impressed by the pligg website design.Later I just moved to hotaru. This CMS has more features than pligg.

Suggestions :

1) I think Home page of Hotaru website has to be changed. You may need to include the list of features. This CMS has all set of features but for a new visits it is very hard to find. Please have a look at Simple Machine Feature Page Here (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/features.php)

2) You may also provide details of spam control features of the CMS. Pligg is spammy.

I was looking for a Digg like platform which is easy to extend. My first stop was with Pligg, then after some further investigations I came across Hotaru. Now, I am trying to get familiar with Hotaru.

Man, how did I discover Hotarucms? Is was certainly love at first sight when we finally met, but how did we meet? It was simply destiny. I have come here after many weeks of failure after failure at the hand of evil Drupal, wanker Joomla! and buggy Pligg. It was only three days ago when I finally saw my error and embraced Hotareucms--thank God for the chance meeting! I am happy now and busy at work building some thing small for my self and community. Thank you all for the sweet plug-ins that are now making my life livable again, thank youuuu brothers and sisters.

Thanks!

I too had taken a hard look at Pligg. Found some sweet reviews about Hotaru (also looked at Drigg and Social CMS) and decided on Hotaru.

Just installed it on http://cooking.edu.pl/

Nothing there now except the blank installation. Went very smooth and quick. So impressed.

Did have a question on the database prefix. It kind of threw me. My databases are prefixed with my username as in
xxxxxxxx_

So when I created a database "hotaru" it becomes xxxxxxxx_hotaru

I tried this prefix xxxxxxxx_hotaru and it did not work

I tried this prefix xxxxxxxx_ and it worked like a champ.

Still somewhat confused.

Great product so far!

Thanks

Ron

I have been using pligg with not very desirable results. Then I read about Hotaru on some forums. I am very impressed with the design and functions. I have downloaded Hotaru, but I need help in installing it on my site. I couldn't do it following the docs and other install instructions myself. Not very tech-wise :) Can you suggest someone, please?

Best Regards

Maybe if you could tell us where are you having trouble, some people here could help you out. Is it setting up the database? or something else?

I was looking for a social bookmarking script and found Pligg. I spent some time viewing their forums, etc.. the smarty templates was a little disappointing but I was almost going to install it, I had already downloaded it but then accidentally I found Hotaru doing a search and changed my mind and installed it instead. You can check it at: http://www.voxr.com.br/

I'm pretty much the same. I found it after being so frustrated with Pligg and trying to find an alternative. Hotaru is almost perfect.

What's next though?

I have several sites with pligg, but I have problems with my hosting company because database was too large and made too much queries which made problems at my shared hosting account. After several tickets ( database access suspended - Please note this account was suspended because due to database usage and not CPU load. Our experience shows that the pligg script does not use database resource efficiently and would benefit from the ability to perform database caching but such an option does not exist for pligg to my knowledge), I've decided to find solution. I've googled problem and I found review at one forum ( I don't remember the name, sorry ) for your program and at this moment I'm transfer everything from my old pligg to Horatu. It's a little bit slow, but I hope that finally I've find solution for my problem.
When I'll finish I'll share my experience about this transfer with other people.

I'm running a website based on pligg... While I appreciate pligg and it's community, I wasn't too crazy about it. I started searching for alternatives and stumbled upon HotaruCMS. It's easy to understand and customize, good documentation, extremely flexible and truly modular. I couldn't be happier and I'm in the middle of moving my site from pligg to Hotaru. On a negative note, I hear few people mentioning it on being abandoned/dead... I hope it's not true and if it is, why is that happening? I'd appreciate you wonderful people's response...

I stumbled onto hotaru cms recently (from one list or the other listing various CMSs) .. It does look very very promising. However, have folks posting here observed that the project seems somewhat quiet, as in no longer being advanced ? .. Seems funding is the primary issue, as I read in another thread.

Can those of us posting here on how much better it is than pligg, drigg, reddit, etc .. put our monies where our mouths are .. and see how we can support this project so it does not die away? Just a thought ..

Glad to see there is still interest. I will keep coding if people keep spreading the word. The v.1.5.0 is coming along well and almost ready for release with a lot of new changes to Admin UI improved db access, a new default theme based on bootstrap, and more. A number of plugins have been updated also including the Autoreader plugin which is always popular.

We will be making an announcement about a gallery for themes and plugins shortly which should give people better ways to search

Would this mean better load times (as in, improved site speed) :o

When everyone can tell me they will use PHP 5.3 or greater, then yes

For slow sites, I would like to work with them so I can identify what is causing the slow speed before jumping in to change everything. It is quite possible that one part of the database may be causing the slow speed and not all of it. Can you point me to a link or page you have which is slow. You can send the link privately if you dont want to attract spam

Yep, that's true.
Ive seen several times this Hotaru Forums ( which is closed) before joining baker cms, because the Drigg CMS was built such a way it cannot be handle either in database or the server. One side the database was growing and I am unable to pay for a server since the site that much won't make money.
Comparing to hotaru and Drigg is more difference
Hotaru is built easy to handle and requires less space resources etc.
Hotaru can handle spam in most methods but Drigg can't still this Hotaru CMS needed some more changes.

Drigg has best seo that has built by Drupal that makes powerful.

I am reading your post from the last two day, but not yet understanding where does the problem coming between these two CMS. However I will private message to you with some screenshots and two sites to compare them.
If you had came earlier then I would had tested in several ways to see why Hotaru CMS was not ranking well.
