Moved from "How-to and Troubleshooting" to "Other".

Those plugins remind me of Google Friend Connect. Adding social widgets to your site is a great idea, but for some reason GFC never took off.

Personally, I hope Facebook fails in its bid to take over the internet. The web isn't supposed to be dominated by large corporations, because all they want is your money.

+1 for facebook to fall flat on their face! I don't get it myself.

if there was an open source version of the same type of thing where we all could benefit from full knowledge of all the metrics behind it.. that was NOT all owned by one global media corp.. then, it would be cool. as it is, I kinda want to remove all of my 'facebook connect' type integration stuff all together.

i think its just the way it is, (almost) everybody has facebook
a facebook profile is the online identity and people use it to login on sites like gamespot, cnet and more FaceBook Connect sites
its an easy way for visitors to login and interact with their online identity

the difference with Google Friend Connect is that (although a lot of users have a google account) it has not established itself as a social networking brand or online identity
its just another account to manage email, calendar, maps and what not... its (partially) very private information
as facebook is build to share your opinions to the public! which makes it excellent to use your facebook account to login in the "wild", because the interaction adds up to the social networking/online idendity

then there is OpenSocial (http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/), a counterpart to facebooks social api-s which is founded by Google, MySpace and then some
On the plusside:
- it is an openplatform, so a lot is possible
On the downside:
- it is still very much evolving over time so someone might need to update the code from time to time just to keep up
- everyone has facebook, as it is the social networking platform, and facebook doesnt opensocial

the best thing possible for hotaru is (besides facebook supporting opensocial) making two plugins:
1. FaceBookSocial plugin
2. OpenSocial plugin
