Hi everyone,
I am going to try my first install and I am hoping it will go very smoothly. :-) The site will be a Digg-like site. Is there a thread somewhere that discusses which plugins are recommended for a standard Digg-like voting site including optimal spam protection? Also, how can I go about getting an estimate for the cost of building a Bad Behavior plugin? Thanks.
Rich
Use the Bookmarking plugin pack (http://hotarucms.org/showthread.php?79-Quick-Start-Plugin-Packs) and see Installing your first plugins (http://hotarudocs.com/Installing_Your_First_Plugins%20for).
How you protect your site from spam is up to you. On my site (from 2007 and on all the Pligg lists), I use the Stop Forum Spam and TOS Anti-Spam plugins. I put all new posts and comments in moderation and get them emailed to me so I can check if the user is legit or not. If not, I physically delete them while adding them to my Blocked list and Stop Forum Spam. This process is just a few clicks in User Manager. If they are honest users, I approve their post/comment and they won't be moderated again.
If you're coming from a Wordpress background, understand that many spammers will manually sign up, complete captchas and confirm their email addresses on bookmarking sites. So while automatic solutions will stop most of them, it won't stop all. These guys get paid to post links for their clients so will jump through hoops. Fortunately, you can just let the spammers build up in your moderation queue and then zap them all in one go every few days.
I've emailed you with a quote for Bad Behavior.

Hi,
I just completed my first install on my site in a subdirectory. Everything seems to be working and I entered a test submit but I get a "page not found" on the home page instead of the submitted story. Any ideas? Thanks.

Maybe Friendly URLs is ON and the htaccess_default hasn't been renamed to .htaccess?
Maybe Bookmarking is not at the top of the plugin order? If you've got a link, please share it so we can take a look.

Thanks Nick and petsagouris. There were problems in plugin installation so I uninstalled and reinstalled all of the plugins. I also renamed htaccess_default to .htaccess. I think the documentation at this time is a bit fragmented. Maybe I can help later on in consolidating and cleaning up the documentation.
I now have to choose a theme for my initial prototype. I will have a custom theme made for me before I go live but can anyone recommend one of the free themes which is known to be stable and also which visitors might find most attractive? Any preferences at this time? Thanks all for your help.

Hi, Nick. Can hotaru be use only for social bookmarking site?sorry, newbie here.
If you have no programming experience, then you're limited to the current plugins which are mostly designed for social bookmarking. If you know how to code, you can make your own suite of plugins to do whatever you like.

Thanks Nick, guess I'll stick to how the plugins is intended for...:)

Hi Richrf, It is Feb 2011 and I am going thru the installation posts. Notice above quote and wondering if u had made that consolidated and cleaning documentation? If yes, can u please mention the link here for people who are going thru the install forum who have that fragmented feeling. Tx
