At Last! Pligg's Latest Anti-Spam Module

Rate this Entry
Three words came to mind when I saw that Pligg had released a module for Stop Forum Spam:

'bout bloody time!
If you don't already know, Stop Forum Spam is a database of spammers which can be checked against automatically when a user attempts to sign up for your site.

Although I haven't used Pligg for over two years, my site is still ever-present on the dozens of "Pligg Lists" that circulate on the net for spammers to post their ads to.

Hotaru has its own SFS plugin (Stop Spam), but I suspect most of the blacklisted spammers are those that target these CMSs, and as such I haven't found it as useful against Pligg spammers as I had expected.

However, I hope that will change soon as Pligg users adopt chuckroast's new SFS Global Antispam module. My only hope is that Stop Forum Spam can handle the load! Before I banned India, I submitted over a hundred spammers to SFS in the space of 4 weeks - and that's just me! Therefore, I'll join chuckroast in suggesting users donate to SFS to keep it afloat.

You banned India?!?! I think Russia should be on the list too Either way, it's probably a good thing that many Pligg users will now be helping to beef up the SFS list too. Props to them. There's one more new Hotaru CMS site that's ready for some epic battles against spammers too.

StopForumSpam keeps a list of everyone you've blacklisted, along with a little country flag for where they came from. About 90% of the spammers were from India. Of course, they have no chance of actually getting their spam seen on a Hotaru site (if configured correctly), but you still have to sift through it all for legitimate users and ban the baddies. It's time consuming, so my solution was to zap India. With Pligg users on board, maybe we can blacklist all the spammers from India without having to ban the whole country.

Like your new site by the way!

I gotcha. Hopefully it'll get easier for all Hotaru site owners in the spam-killing department as time goes by, especially with Pligg starting to use SFS. I 'm sure my site will be a target for spammers too, so I'll sure do my part to pitch in. Thanks for the plugin and the kind words on my site.
