Default How do you do your development?

Hey Team just getting started with Hotaru (currently using pligg) and want to see what the devs are using for the development tools and environments.

For my PHP development I currently use:
Ubuntu (10.04) server running on virtualbox (3.8.2)
    Netbeans (6.9.1) with xdebug
    PHP5 (5.3.2)
    MySQL (5.1)
MySQL Administrator - Thinking about switching to MySQL Workbench

    On My PC I use:
    FTP FileZilla (3.3.4.1)
    Photoshop CS3
    Expersion Web 4
    Flex Builder 3

For hosting I am use shared hosting a hostgator. I will be switch to a VPS after I get my pligg site swapped over to Hotaru CMS. I'm not sure if I will stick with hostgator or move to another hosting company.

    Hi Bill,

Nice to meet you. I too have just begun looking at Hotaru after rejecting Pligg.

I am currently on Hostgator and Hostmonster and find that Hostmonster provides superior support and uptime with equivalent performance. You might want to check out Hostmonster.

One of my Hotaru sites is on Hostmonster. I have some pligg sites still on that server and on a Hostgator shared. The test sites for my themes and development are on a dedicated server from ProNet (who I think changed name to CoolHandle now).

And my main Hotaru site is currently on a liquidweb VPS, waiting to be moved to a stormondemand dedicated/'bare metal' server.
Storm looks like it is going to kick ass

I can't stand Hostmonster, for shared stuff I have always found Hostgator to be better.
Hostmonster messed me around a bit once because one of my scripts was creating a lot of cache files and they only allow a set number of files. They will throttle your CPU if you have any traffic.
I understand the limits of shared hosting but my shared server on HostGator is loaded up with a hell of a lot more sites than my Hostmonster shared and they've never said anything...

Also, Hostmonster own the SimpleScripts platform and when we asked them to add Hotaru CMS as an install option they wanted us to pay them $500...

Ahh yes I forgot my local setup.
I use Ubuntu linux with a few local LAMP installs. I only really use Bluefish and gedit for development, both are simple text/code editors. I use Firefox with Firebug and Chrome(although the linux version is still in beta I think) with the developer tools for testing. I also have Opera installed.
I have a virtual machine of XP which I fire up for Photoshop, Illustrator and testing in I.E.

My local set up is WampServer 2.0 running PHP 5.3.0, Apache 2.1.11 and MySQL 5.1.36.

For databases, I use phpMyAdmin 3.2.5. I think it's out-of-date, but at least it works.

For coding, I have NetBeans, but keep reverting to EditPad Pro because I'm just so used to it.

Imaging is the same. I have PhotoShop CS4, but still use my old favorite, Paint Shop Pro 8 for most stuff.

SmartFTP is my trusted FTP client.

I use WinMerge for comparing files, and TortoiseSVN for subversion.

I have two monitors, but an old PC which I bought on January 30th, 2007, the day Windows Vista was released. It takes 20 minutes to reboot.

    Hi mabujo,

Hostmonster use to have an excellent automated backup/restore system which allowed me to restore to any point in time. Unfortunately they have discontinued their service. Their support staff was more accessible to me than Hostgator (wait times are longer with Hostgator) when I needed them, but for my new site I will probably have to look for a hosting service that provides better point-in-time automated backup/recovery capabilities.

Forgot to say that my sites run on a Liquid Web dedicated server. The hardware is great, but the support is even better.

:Nick waves at Liquid Web team :

Yep liquidweb have awesome support. Usually. I've been waiting 3 days for a migration to my new storm server :-/
But it's a different team from the main support team from what I can gather - support always fix any problem I have in less time than it takes most hosts to respond. Which is why I'm a bit surprised/pissed off at the moment...
